Penne alla Vodka

I was actually craving pasta last night. I have never actually had a craving for pasta, but there is a first time for everything I guess. So I made penne alla vodka. Which is exactly what is sounds like, penne in vodka sauce.

I have started watching Northern Exposure on DVD. Does anyone remember that show? It is so funny. I am glad it is as good as I remember, b/c sometimes when you watch a show as a teen (aka This So Called Life), it isn't as good as you remember.

Lamb, Act II

Okay, I have been having a lot of lamb this week. But that is because there is only two of us to eat it, and 4 lbs. of meat goes a long way.

Last night I made Rachel Ray's moraccan leg of lamb. Every recipe I have ever tried of Rachel's has always turned out very excellent. This was extremely fragrant, but I think I used too much stock and watered down the flavors.

However, for your viewing pleasure, here is the recipe:

Truffles

So what is the deal with these things? I got truffle oil for Christmas, and I almost vomited upon eating it. Now, I probably didn't use it correctly. And I have never been able to afford to go out to a restaurant and eat something prepared properly with truffles. But I do love the romance of them.

National Geographic did an article back in May that you can read at their website. I loved how it talks about trifolau, the truffle hunters. These men go out with their dogs, in complete secrecy, to find these mushrooms - which just happen to be, ounce for ounce, the second most expensive food in the world.

I also love that you can use pigs to find these things. I mean how funny is it, to picture all these rich snobby New Yorkers dining at their four star restaurants on what could be considered, in one light, a fungus that pigs eat! LOL.

Tuesday Morning Quotes

I am thinking of doing a series of food quotes on Tuesdays. Sometimes short, sometimes long.

So here is the first one:

One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating. ~Luciano Pavarotti and William Wright, Pavarotti, My Own Story

Please Put out Your Twinkie

Slate has an awesome article today about how the gov. has pretty much won there fight against tobacco and is now moving on to the "junk food industry". Here is a quick excerpt.

How do we fight it? Everyone agrees on exercising and eating responsibly. The debate is over what the government should do. Health advocates want to restrict junk-food sales, regulate advertising, require more explicit labels, and ban trans fats (also known as partially hydrogenated oils), which are often put into crackers, cookies, and other products to prolong shelf life. They marshal the kind of evidence that won the war on smoking: correlations between soda, junk food, obesity, disease, and death. Lawyers who made their fortunes suing tobacco companies are preparing suits against soda companies. Two months ago, when President Bush gave a health-care speech at the headquarters of Wendy's, activists compared the hamburger chain to Philip Morris. They see themselves as waging the same brave struggle, this time against "the food industry." But somehow, "the food industry" doesn't sound quite as evil as "the tobacco industry." Something about food—the fact that it keeps us alive, perhaps—makes its purveyors hard to hate.

Easter Feast

We cooked lamb out on the grill today. It was so great with a little garlic and rosemary. On the side - rice pilaf, rolls, asparagus. And banana layer cake for dessert. (The cake was just okay.)

It is traditional, I think to eat lamb on Easter. I think it is ironic. "blood of the lamb" and all that jazz. My cousins eat ham today. As a symbol that the old covenant has passed away and the New Covenant has been established. Which I think is a good tradition, but I don't like ham all that much.
